The Greensboro Public Library, Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) are teaming up to honor Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary at Greensboro’s Earth Day Celebration. This free, community-oriented event will take place at Country Park on Saturday, April 18, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Greensboro’s Earth Day Celebration is designed to encourage members of the community to learn about – and adopt – sustainable practices that will help care for the Earth. Guests will be invited to discover nature as they explore trails, meet live animals and learn about sustainable gardening.
Dozens of ecological organizations will be on hand with displays and hands-on activities highlighting everything from alternative vehicles to earth-friendly science spotlights. Live music, hayrides, food trucks and family-focused games and activities will enhance the celebratory atmosphere.
Martha Regester, the GSC’s VP of Education, says, “Fifty years is a milestone for Earth Day and we’re looking forward to the next 50 years of caring for this planet’s resources. Country Park’s trails and accessibility are a true Greensboro gem and we are excited to have so many area partners sharing their expertise with families.”
Guests are encouraged to enter the celebration at Jaycee Park, located at 3802 Jaycee Park Drive. Admission is free. Learn more at www.greensboro-nc.gov/earthday.

We are hoping these free, after-hours opportunities will become fun, regular outings for members of our community. Each year, the third Saturday of September (September 21, this year) is celebrated as International Red Panda Day. The Red Panda Network coordinates this event to raise awareness about the importance of saving this unique animal. Currently, red pandas are classified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The Greensboro Science Center is home to the only red panda in an accredited zoo in North Carolina. Taiji (affectionately nicknamed Tai by keepers) came to the Center in March of this year and is on exhibit in Animal Discovery Zoo. In an effort to encourage folks to learn more about Tai and his fellow red pandas, we’d like to share the Red Panda Network’s Red Panda Ranger program. By participating in a series of activities, children can earn an official Red Panda Ranger certificate and badge!
PLEASE SHARE: Once you earn your Red Panda Ranger badge, please take a picture of yourself sporting your badge or certificate and share it on our Facebook page. We’d love to see photos of this year’s Red Panda Rangers!

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that the GSC will be hosting its own International Red Panda Day celebration on Saturday, September 21 from 10 AM to 4 PM. During this time, we will be hosting educational activities including special Keeper talks/training demos at Taiji’s exhibit, activity sheets for kids, a red panda canvas painting raffle (tickets on sale for $2 in the gift shop), fun facts, and more. Please join us for this very special event! All raffle proceeds will benefit the Red Panda Network.
