My Why: Kayla

How does the GSC impact individuals, families and communities? We think it’s best to let YOU answer that question!

Read our Q&A with GSC staff member Kayla and learn about what makes the GSC so special to her.

Job title: Horticultural Groundskeeper

Primary Responsibilities: Groundskeeping, plant care-taker, speaking to guests about the surrounding plant life.

How many years have you worked at the GSC? 1-1.5

What is it about the GSC that makes you stay? The people (and animals) I work with are great! The GSC takes care of us and genuinely seem to care about their employees.

Why is the GSC important to you personally? I love seeing all the diverse plant species I get to work with; I love that my job means something to others, especially those that live in the urban areas and don’t get to see much greenery throughout their day-to-day. My favorite part is how amazed the kids are when I’m doing something as simple as digging a hole for a plant. They find so much wonder in the smallest things and it makes my day and perspective on things so much better.

Why is the GSC important to the community? The GSC is a wonderful place that entices learning in a fun environment. There is not only plant life, but also many diverse animal species from jungle animals, to underwater critters, and even farm dwellers. It’s amazing to see that some people have never seen a chicken in real life before. I come from a rural area so I’m used to it, but I love seeing others learn not only where their food comes from, but also being able to experience the large world of science and discovery!

What impact do you hope the GSC has on guests? I hope the GSC continues to bring a larger than life exploration experience for families of all ages. The GSC provides a great place to be whether it’s a family, a couple date, a field trip, or even just an individual who wants to take a walk through the park. I like that there is something for all ages and abilities!
